Student Conduct Policies

The policies listed below represent a small collection of rules, regulations, and policies established by the university to govern student behavior. While a full listing of university policies can be accessed here, this page contains policies that are frequently accessed by students. As members of this scholarly community, all NC State students are expected to know and adhere to these polices.


Code of Student Conduct

The Code serves as the basis for student conduct at NC State.  It contains information related to the University’s jurisdiction over student behavior, academic and non-academic violations, potential sanctions available when a violation occurs, and information regarding interim suspension.

Academic violations include allegations of cheating, plagiarism, or aiding another to cheat or plagiarize.  Non-academic violations vary widely and include rules concerning alcohol, drugs, infliction or threat of bodily harm, vandalism, disorderly conduct, sexual and racial harassment, sexual assault, and more.

All students are STRONGLY encouraged to read and understand the Code of Student Conduct.

Student Discipline Procedures

The Student Disciplinary Procedures establish the procedures that will be used when a student has been accused of a violation.  It also establishes the rights and responsibilities for individuals accused of a violation (the respondent) and those bringing an allegation on behalf of the University (the complainant).  In addition, the Student Discipline Procedures establish and govern the rules regarding student appeals in the event that the student is found responsible for an alleged violation.

Graduate Student Discipline

This policy establishes procedures related to graduate student discipline.  Graduate students are generally held to the same standard as undergraduate students with regards to violations of the Code of Student Conduct. In most cases, this will result in the application of the previously mentioned Student Discipline Procedures. In other cases, however, the Graduate School may elect to initiate its own disciplinary review by using these guidelines.

Student Grievance Procedures

The Grievance Procedures establish the process for undergraduate students who believe that their rights under law or university policy have been violated.  This procedure is to be used to resolve grievances against decisions or actions that were made by employees or agents of NC State.


Alcohol Policy

This policy establishes the rules regarding the consumption and possession of alcohol by individuals under the age of 21 and at University sponsored social events. Please refer to section 10.1 of the Code of Student Conduct for further rules regarding the possession or consumption of alcohol.

Alcohol Regulation

This is a separate regulation establishing rules regarding the use of state or federal funds to purchase alcohol.  In addition, it sets limits on the possession of alcohol at certain University facilities. Please refer to section 10.1 of the Code of Student Conduct for further rules regarding the possession or consumption of alcohol.

Health and Safety Intervention for Alcohol-Related Emergencies

Established to increase the likelihood that students requiring medical attention will receive assistance, this policy establishes disciplinary incentives for those students or student organizations seeking medical attention for a student as a result of the student’s high risk alcohol consumption.

Computer Use Policy (Regarding Copyright)

This policy establishes rules regarding the violation of state and federal law related to copyrights and patents.  Students are generally prohibited from violating copyright law using University computer systems and internet resources.

Disclosure of Student Records and Student Privacy

Student records are protected by the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act and its supporting regulations.  These regulations provide students with full access to their educational records (including their disciplinary file) and protects their files from being provided to others.

Drug Policy

This policy establishes the University’s philosophy and sanctions to be imposed when a violation of the Drug Policy Occurs.  Please refer to section 10.7 of the Code of Student Conduct regarding the Possession, Distribution, or Sale of Controlled Substances.

Outdoor Assemblies

This policy establishes regulations regarding solicitation, assemblies, and public addresses on University property.

Free Expression Tunnel

This policy establishes rules regarding the Free Expression Tunnel and other Free Speech issues on campus.

Smoking

This policy establishes parameters for smoking on University grounds.  Students are generally restricted from smoking in University buildings and must stay certain distances away from those buildings.

Solicitation

This policy establishes regulations regarding solicitation, assemblies, and public addresses on University property.

University Housing

While living or visiting University Housing, students must adhere to the established community expectations and policies provided by University Housing.

Visitation

This policy establishes regulations regarding visitation in the University’s residence halls. For a listing of halls that have restricted visitation hours, please contact University Housing.
