Comprehensive Clinical Assessment

Depending on the nature of the misconduct, hearing officers assign a structured sanction to address the underlying factors behind the behavior. The Comprehensive Clinical Assessment is an intake meeting to assess a student’s needs, check for safety-related concerns, and identify the best resources to meet those needs.

Sanctioning Philosophy

We do not view this sanction as a punishment, but as a supportive intervention. For many students, this is their first introduction to mental health resources. In partnership with counselors, our goal is to:

• Educate students on the wider impact of their conduct.
• Foster responsible decision-making and self-reflection.
• Equip students with healthy, sustainable coping strategies so they can successfully navigate the challenges of college and remain enrolled.

How to Complete the Sanction?

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility & Choose a Provider

Sanctioned students must see a fully licensed mental health provider.

• On-Campus: If you are actively enrolled and did not receive a criminal citation related to the incident, you can schedule with the University Counseling Center by calling 919-515-2423. For eligible students, the cost is covered by student fees.
• Off-Campus: If you are currently suspended or received a criminal citation, you must use an off-campus provider. (If you already have a personal therapist, ask them if they can perform this assessment. If not, the Counseling Center can help connect you to community providers in Raleigh or your hometown). The cost is dependent on the provider and your insurance.

Step 2: Bring Your Outcome Letter

Share your official outcome letter with your counselor at the start of your intake. This gives them the context they need regarding the violation and what the hearing officer identified as the core topics to address.

Step 3: Sign BOTH Release Forms

You must sign a two-way Release of Information (ROI): one for your counselor and one for the Office of Student Conduct. This allows both offices to communicate and confirm that you are participating.

Step 4: Submit Written Proof of Completing the Intake and Follow Through on Recommendations

The counselor must submit written proof of completing the intake.

If the counselor determines no further treatment is needed, the intake will satisfy the sanction. If they do make professional recommendations, the student is required to complete them. The hearing officer will assign practical deadlines to ensure the student engages with the treatment plan.

Documentation Guidelines for Providers

• Documentation must be sent directly from the provider to the Office of Student Conduct via email, fax, or other secure electronic communication.
• Documentation must include the provider’s name and licensing.
• The date of the intake.
• The name of the student.
• The provider’s professional recommendations, if any.
  • If providers assessment indicates that no further treatment is necessary, simply confirming the completion of the intake will satisfy the student’s sanction requirements.
  • If providers determine that follow-up care is clinically indicated, their formal recommendations shared with our office must explicitly include:
    • The level of care necessary for treatment.
    • The specific type of treatment indicated.
    • The minimum length of treatment required based on the clinical assessment.
